Lluelyn (Lluellyn), Martin

(1616-1682)

   Poet, physician, and principal of St. Mary Hall, Oxford, he was born in London, educated at Westminster School, and graduated M.A. from Christ Church, Oxford, in 1643. During the Civil War he served with the royalist army. He practiced as a doctor in London from around 1648, was granted the degree of M.D. from Oxford in 1653, was made a fellow of the College of Physicians in 1659, and became physician to Charles II after the Restoration. He left Oxford in 1664 and settled in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, and was elected mayor of the borough in 1671. He was buried in the north aisle of High Wycombe Church. Several of his poems were included in Wit's Recreations (1640) (believed to be by Thomas May [see entry]). Some of his publications: Men-Miracles: With Other Poemes, 1646. An Elegy on the Death of the most Illustrious Prince, Henry Duke of Gloucester, 1660. To the Kings most excellent majesty, 1660. Wickham Wakened, or, The Quakers Madrigall in Rime Dogrell, 1672. Three of his other poems: "Cock-throwing," "Epithalamium: to Mistress M.A.," "Ode to Celia."
